Volkswagen posted a surprise increase in first-quarter operating profit as the carmaker is pushing steps to overcome its diesel emissions scandal. Europe's biggest automaker is counting on a deal with U.S. authorities and car owners next month over its rigging of diesel emissions tests while pushing a strategic overhaul across its 12-brand group. U.S. oil rises, global crude weaker on strong Middle East output

U.S. oil prices rose on Tuesday, buoyed by the start of the U.S. summer driving season, while international fuel markets fell on rising output in the Middle East, which mostly serves Asian customers. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures were trading at $49.58 per barrel at 0707 GMT (04:07 a.m. EDT), up 25 cents from their last settlement. Brent crude oil futures were down 18 cents to $49.58 a barrel.

Dozens of French police raided Google's offices on Tuesday, escalating an investigation over suspected tax evasion. “We have collected a lot of computer data,” Houlette said in an interview with Europe 1 radio, TV channel iTele and newspaper Le Monde, adding that 96 people took part in the raid.
